Sergiy “The Technician” Derevyanchenko won’t be letting Jaime Munguia walk all over him in their upcoming fight.
Just because Munguia will be fighting essentially in his backyard doesn’t mean he’ll have an advantage with most of the fans cheering for the Mexican fighter. Derevyanchenko has fought all of his professional bouts on U.S. soil, with the Ukrainian fighting in ten different states, including three times in California; “The Technician” last fought in The Golden State in the 2021 defeat to Carlos Adames by majority decision. This fight will be his fourth bout in California. The fact is that Derevyanchenko has fought as an underdog for most of his career. So he’s quite used to having the fans rooting against him.
“He’ll be fighting in his backyard, it might help him, but I really don’t care about it. It won’t matter, I’ve fought people from around the world, I have a little bit of experience going up against fighters with a home-field advantage.”
Derevyanchenko won’t be taking Munguia lightly. He’s well aware of the heart that many Mexican fighters battle with in the ring.
“Munguia is a true fighter, he’s a Mexican fighter. Every time he fights he applies pressure. Every time he fights he goes for solid combinations. For him it’s always pressure, pressure, pressure.”
Derevyanchenko has been preparing for this fight tirelessly with trainer Andre Rozier, who he credits as one of the most important people in his camp.
“Training has been good, my training camp, the sparring sessions, everything’s been good. Andre Rozier is the guy that’s been most important in my corner.”
Derevyanchenko’s fight in October 2019 with Gennady “Triple G” Golovkin will certainly help him in the ring, but he doesn’t want to dwell on his career-defining loss any longer. At one point in time Gennady Golovkin was considered one of the best boxers pound-for-pound.
“It’s in the past, I’d like to move forward. It’s history. Of course, every fight gains me a bit more experience. That one specifically, was certainly a fight that gave me a lot of experience.”
“The Technician” has lost four of his last six fights. Sergiy Derevyanchenko is aiming to win back-to-back fights for the first time since March 2018 against a very tough opponent. If he does come out victorious over Jaime Munguia, his name will be in the mix with David Benavidez, Dmitry Bivol, and Edgar Berlanga for a possible fight against the undisputed champion of the 168 lbs division, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.
